TAFCA Individual 2008

Report by Ray Noble

The individual attracted a poor turnout this year with only 21 entries. Apart from that it ran very well and all players enjoyed themselves.

Top seed Ed Spencer graded 2134 won the championship with 4½ points, this despite a last match scare against Martin Gourlay(1730) who could have at least drawn against Ed but went for the win in time trouble because a draw got him now where. A win would have given him a tie for first place. In the end he lost the match and handed Ed the title of TAFCA Individual champion out right.

Presidents Cup winner Jim Anderson (1639) to some extent had a good draw overall, but had a great match against Manuel Carballo graded 2082 from Glenrothes. He was a little disappointed because he felt he had a win but got nobbled by a terrific move by the Glenrothes player which meant he had to settle for a credible draw.

As usual the under 1400 Shield was a close fought battle with 3 players tying for the title on 2½ point each: Lisa Paton, Bryan O`Rourke & David Cumming. Lisa in getting to 2½ points beat her brother Robbie McLeod in a free for all match which given there close rivalry could have ended in a family feud, especially as Robbie winds his Sister up something rotten. This time Lisa had the last laugh!

Robert Burnett beat me in the last round to secure the under 1600 grading prize of £20.

Fair City Chess Festival

"The venue has been changed, this is due to a double booking by Dewars Conference Centre, and they have now allocated the SALUTATION HOTEL, SOUTH ST. PERTH instead. It is lovely, but not ideal, but it is what we must run with as we have less than a week to go. We are in the process of re-emailing everyone and contacting those who have entered, please do let your friends and clubmates know this new information if they do not already know!!

As always we will uphold our high standards and aim to provide the best possible chess event for all the family, with events for players of all abilities. We look forward to seeing you next Sunday!

Please follow the link to the Dalguise Website which will details a map and pictures of the new venue. We are in the midst of making up a new entry form and will be contacting entrants this evening. It shows the nearest car parking and where the new venue is situation. Once again we are sorry for any confusion caused but we hope you will still support us in our 14th event!

In our Richardson Cup match against Cathcart we lost 7.5 - 0.5. The score is a bit misleading as Roy and Fergus were close to wins and everyone else put up strong performances.
