2010-11 Report

(By Ray Noble)

The TAFCA Individual championship 2010-11 took place between Saturday/Sunday 7/8th May at Ninewells Chess Club, Ninewells Hospital. This was a 5 round Swiss, 30 moves in 60 minutes+15 minutes quick-play. Sixteen players took part from Castlehill, Dundee/Victoria, Perth, Glenrothes, Kinross & Ninewells.

Three matches were played on the Saturday and in round one the giant killer shock was Declan Shafi aged 10 graded 870 whipping Ray Noble graded 1470 (and falling!). All so in round one Lisa Paton graded 1014 won against Martin Chalmers graded 1456.After that most rounds went to form with Ed Spencer taking the lead with a perfect score after 4 rounds. In round 5 Mikey Grove on 3 points was paired against Ed Spencer and a draw would have been enough for Ed to win outright. Mikey was in no mood to oblige and after a hard fought fight Mikey overcame Ed to tie for first place along with Ed and Michael Roth on 4 points each.

The leaders of the Presidents cup, Harvey Duke & Kiron Roy did not fair well in the last round being drawn against much stronger opposition, both lost which allowed Martin Chalmers (3/5) to sneak past them with a game deserving of a brilliancy prize against Paul Shafi to claim the grading band under 1650 Presidents Cup.

Harvey Duke(2.5) secured the grading band under 1400 Challenge Shield despite his loss to George Pyrich in the last round.

Declan Shafi took the Giant Killer prize.
