20 players took part in the 2nd TAFCA Individual Allegro, held at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee on Saturday 17th December 2011.

This was a six round Swiss; 25 minutes each player time-control, and an allegro grading event. Clubs represented; Castlehill 9 players; Dundee/Victoria 4; Glenrothes 4; St.Andrews 2; Perth 1;

Thanks go to Ninewells Hospital for an excellent venue, also thanks to Castlehill Chess Club for the use of there chess equipment. And finally to all the players who took part, for without there support, it would not go ahead!

A minutes silence was held before the tournament started to pay respects to our long time and present TAFCA President, Jim Chalmers of Dundee/Victoria Chess Club, who sadly passed away a week ago. His role in developing  and supporting Chess was of vital importance to the progression of the sport in this area.

May he rest in peace.

Round by Round Report:

In round 1 the shock of the round was Leonardo Sani (Castlehill), aged 12, and graded 712, beating Andrew Newton (St.Andrews), graded 1660. This was a fantastic result. That’s how to start the tournament off!

Round 2 went to plan, with all the top players winning.

Round 3, the top board match was David Findlay ( 2171) v Mikey Grove (1874). This was a cracker! The game was like a seesaw, but in the end Mikey withstood the enormous pressure David put him under and won the match. This put Mikey on 3 points. Daniel Rocks and Alan Borwell joined him. Declan Shafi (Castlehill) aged 11, won his third round match against Allan Greenshields to get his campaign off and running!

In round 4, the top match was Daniel Rocks (Castlehill) v Alan Borwell (Dundee/Victoria). Daniel was in fine form and it was a very complicated game, which given the age difference between Daniel and Alan, gave Daniel a time-advantage. In the end time was Alan’s undoing and he lost the match. Declan drew his match against the much stronger player, Jim McCluskey (Castlehill). In the background going unnoticed was a player moving up the gears as each round passed. But who is he?

In the penultimate round 5, two players were on the full 4 points. Mikey Grove & Daniel Rocks, both Castlehill. They drew the match after a titanic struggle, which gave both players that sinking feeling at times! Was a draw enough for either of them?

Leonardo drew his match against a much stronger and experienced opponent Ian Morris (Glenrothes). There were a few niggles for some reason, and things looked a bit edgy for a while, but it all worked out in the end and it was a great result for Leonardo (Castlehill).

Declan Shafi aged 11 and from Castlehill was on a roll with another great result against Colin Young (Castlehill), who has been showing good form this year. The quite man moving up the gears did it again with an unexpected, but outstanding win against the formidable and much higher graded David Findlay. This made it two wins in a “row” for our so far unsung hero of the day? “e” by gum!

Going into the 6th and last round, two players were on 4.5 points. Daniel Rocks & Mikey Grove, but they had already played each other so……….

Miley Grove was on board 1 with black against Andy Rowe (Dundee/Victoria), who was on 4 points. Daniel Rocks was on board two with white against David Findlay, on 3 points. Board 3 saw Alan Borwell also on 4 points with Black against Michael Roth (Perth).  Alan over came Michael to put his marker in at 5 points, but the other results were out of his hands. Daniel Rocks unbelievably made a blunder error, something he just does not do very often. This against David was of course suicide. Daniel was not happy with himself after all the hard work in the 5 previous rounds. But that’s life.

Now to board one and the big one. Would Mikey be in the Apple Grove, picking the fruits of his labour, or would he be left in the Lemon Grove, with a sour taste in his mouth, or could Andy make it 3 win in a row! Andy played like a man demented, doing his Kojac lollipop impression, he out played a stunned Mikey to take the point and pip him to the post. Who loves yeh baby! What a turnaround in the last round. Both the leaders losing their matches and ending up with nothing. Too win the Allegro, you need points, and what do points make, prizes!  Andy Rowe & Alan Borwell both finished equal 1st on 5 points and took the title of TAFCA Individual allegro home to Dundee & Victoria Chess Club. Well-played gentlemen. What a fantastic last round to finish the tournament off!

Now the under 1650 grading prize went to Andy Paulin from Castlehill after a fine win against Andrew Newton (St.Andrews). Andy had to hope the other results went his way, and boy did they do that with Andy Rowe upsetting the apple cart! Well-done Andy Paulin.

The under 1400 grading prize went to “The Smiling assassin”, Declan Shafi (1235) with a terrific win against Nigel Whyte (Dundee/Victoria) to finish on 3.5 points. Well clear of the field. Well played my son, No sorry Paul Shafi`s son! Figure of speech so to speak!

The junior prize went to Castlehill`s newest junior member of the club, Leonardo Sani, aged 12 and graded 712. This was a great tournament for him playing wise and the experience will we hope be put to good use in the future. One to watch me thinks.

The consolation prize of the silliest hat competition went to Mikey Grove for his impression of Hedi!

Thank you all and see you again next year!

14/12/10

22 players took part in the inaugural TAFCA Allegro held in Ninewells Chess Club. Several juniors took part, which is only good for the game in the TAFCA area. 6 round Swiss, 25 minutes each player format. The four top players were over 2000+ making for a very strong tournament.

Peter Constantinou(FM) representing St.Andrews Uni and the number one seed won the event with a perfect 6 out of 6;  Ed Spencer representing Dundee/Victoria finished Runner-Up on 5/6.

The top junior was Calum Pretious (13) representing Carse of Gowrie, who finished on a more than respectable 2/6 when you consider the strength of the field.

The two grading prizes went to Martin Chalmers & Ray Noble both representing Castlehill Chess Club.

The venue was excellent a part from needing a wet cloth and Hoover!

Could all players involved please email Ray Noble and give there views, thoughts, constructive criticisms and ideas on the future format of the tournament, i.e. time-control, length of lunch break, how many rounds, etc. It’s your competition and it must be played in the format most of you want. So let him know please.
